What actually matters when buying a professional French horn secondhand.

Single, Double, or Triple

A double horn (F/Bb) is the standard professional choice and what most of these listings will be. Triple horns add a high F side for security in the extreme upper register — useful for some players, unnecessary weight and cost for others.

Rotary Valve Condition

French horns use rotary valves, not piston valves — check specifically that they're not loose or clicking, since rotary valve rebuilds are a specialized (and not cheap) repair that fewer techs can do well.

Kruspe vs. Geyer Wrap

These are two different tubing layouts affecting hand position and feel more than tone. If you learned on one wrap style, switching to the other takes real adjustment — worth confirming before buying a horn built on the unfamiliar wrap.

Why are professional French horns so expensive relative to other brass? +
