What to actually weigh before buying a professional trombone secondhand.

Slide Condition

This is the single biggest factor in a used trombone. Ask for a video of the slide in motion — it should move smoothly through its full range with no sticking, catching or unevenness, regardless of how good the rest of the horn looks.

Bore Size

Medium-bore (0.500"-0.525") trombones suit jazz and commercial playing with a quicker response; large-bore (0.547"+) suits orchestral and concert band playing with a broader, darker sound. Match the bore to the playing you actually do.

Tenor vs. Bass Trombone

Most professional players own a tenor as their primary horn; a bass trombone (with an F attachment, sometimes two) is a distinct instrument for lower parts. Don't buy a bass trombone assuming it will function as your everyday tenor.
